At Abyssinian Dance Center we take pride in being able to offer classes by many different teachers.  We believe each student should have the opportunity to experience a variety of instructors in order to best define their own personal, unique style.  Our punch card system and schedule allows every student to find the best fit for their own needs.

Kellie

Kellie started taking belly dance in 2001 at the Burien Community Center, mostly as a way to exercise and to provide herself a creative outlet.  She immediately fell in love with the many styles, the history and the wonderful camraderie with other women. A mother of two teenage daughters, she soon brought one into the dance as well and was delighted to share her love of belly dance.  She has spent time taking various workshops and studying with different teachers since. She got the idea for the Abyssinian Dance Center in Burien because there was little in the area for belly dance products, so with her husbands blessing she took the plunge.

Mira joined her in 2006, sparking more creativity than she ever imagined and developing a sense of true teamwork. Together they have created a beautiful space full of positive energy and encouragement for every woman who walks through the door.

Kellie specializes in young girls and teen instruction and directs the troupes Shabibah and Cemiyah. You can see them perform at the Burien Strawberry Festival.  She also teaches an adult beginning class and is a member of the dance troupe "Aura Moon". Kellie has taken many workshops from top instructors in addition to her regular classes and has a certificate from Tamalyn Dallal's Teacher Training as well as a certificate from Saqra's Bellydancer Instructor Intensive Seminar.

Mira and Kellie

Mira

Mira dipped her toes into the world of belly dance in the summer of 1996 with her sister's encouragement. Reliving their childhood dream of becoming belly dancers as they spun in circles on the grassy lawn with her mother's tablecloths.  They joined in classes at the Burien Community Center and discovered the joy of earthy rhythms, beautiful music and being graceful.

She continued her classes at the community center and supplemented her training by participating in a variety of workshops and different instructors. In 2006, she became certified by Hadia of Montreal and continues to hone her skill despite her busy schedule.

Mira feels blessed to have the opportunity to work with beginning students and teach them the foundations of belly dance, feeling more like it's a sharing of joy and celebration rather than instruction.  She emphasizes how unique, graceful, beautiful and special each woman is and feels encouragement is a critical aspect of each students experience.

Mira is also a member of the dance troupe "Aura Moon".

As of 9/16/2008 Setsuna has departed to live overseas to participate in a new adventure.  She plans on returning to teach at ADC hopefully by late 2009!  Our love & support goes to you Ms. Setsuna!

Setsuna

Setsuna loves telling stories and creating moods with her dance. Versatility is tremendously important to her as she feels diversity of movement is what keeps us dancing! Setsuna is constantly searching for new ways to express a mood as well as develop the body.

She has studied and can provide knowledge of many dance forms including Hip Hop, Afro-Brazilian, Multi-provencial Chinese, Indian (Odissi), Bollywood and, of course, the many styles of Bellydance. She has also been influenced by short studies in Punjab, Maori, ballet and modern dance. Setsuna has been certified through Saqra's Bellydance Instructor Intensive Seminar.

"I have an avid penchant for life, dance and the interactions between the two. I perform what I feel, teach what I know and study all I can."

With many influences, the heaviest being Saqra and Jaleh, she is dedicated to supporting the dance community as much as it has supported her. She hopes to do this with her presence, good energy and willingness to provide manual labor! Dance is a one stop entity that keeps her mind, body and spirit fit...and also serves as a much needed escape.

Tayissa Blue

Tayissa began dancing in New Hampshire with a wonderful Egyptian Cabaret instructor named Lorraine Purdy. Her pursuit of dance has gone through many changes over the years. She has explored Cabaret, Medieval, American Tribal Style, Theatrical, Gothic and Tribal Fusion styles. She enjoys exploring thematic concepts in bellydance and costuming. She is a third generation seamstress and places a strong emphasis on costuming in dance as an expression of theatrical concepts.

Currently, she performs and teaches in venues around the Pacific Northwest. She is the director of the Tribal Fusion Troupe, Twilight. They use a combination of Tribal Vaudeville, Gothic, improvisation and choreography to amaze and entertain audiences. Twilight is also pursuing a live music ensemble as part of their troupe. Through further exploration of music, we gain a deeper understanding of the dance we seek to perform.

Tayissa believes that dance is rewarding for women of all ages and body types. Dance improves posture, coordination and provides a deep joy of the world. Through time and dedication anyone can enjoy the myriad of benefits available.
